2005 Odfjell Vineyards Armador Cabernet Sauvignon - Valle Del Maipo
I picked this wine up at Whole Foods in Chicago last month. It was mid-priced at $12.99 and had some kind of in-store rating of 90 or something. It was the right price and we wanted some red wine to go with our leftovers from PF Chang’s. Although it had this mysterious rating, I couldn’t find any employees in the general vicinity who could vouch for it.
It is a Chilean wine, bottled by Odfjell Vineyards in Padre Hurtado, Chile and imported by Select Fine Wine out of Manhasset, NY.
I’m not sure if I’m just jaded with the fantasticly full West-Coast Cabs (as well as the great selection out of Australia for that matter) but, this wine was disappointingly thin-tasting. The aroma was okay, the flavor started with a kind of alcohol-fueled burn– which is okay– but then it just kind of meandered in an earthy tone with none of the distinct berry notes that I usually expect.
I suppose it is damning-with-faint-praise to say it is an “okay” wine. It seems to compliment food since it doesn’t provide an overbearing taste. Not a good “sit and drink” wine.
I wouldn’t buy this again unless I wasn’t provided with other options.
