Stelzner “Claret” Cabernet & Merlot Blend - Napa 2005

Published by Andrew at 11:33 am under 2005, Buy-It, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

Jennifer and I hit Biaggi’s to celebrate her 35th birthday.  We both like the food there and Biaggis is one of the decent places in town to get a good glass of wine.  Once again I decided on the “by the glass” menu.  I chose the Stelzner Cabernet & Merlot Blend.
Biaggi’s menu advertises this as:

CABERNET-MERLOT BLEND, STELZNER “CLARET”, NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
Medium-bodied with layers of blackberry, pepper and integrated oak. The complexity of Bordeaux!

Sounds exciting.  I really like a hint of pepper in a red wine.  Here are the quick notes of what I thought:

Really great blackberry aroma.
Deep burgandy color.
Quite tannic but not bitey.
Definitely know you are drinking a decadent red.
Smooth finish leaving berry and oak on the tongue.

I liked this wine.  It has a little bit of complexity to it’s taste and aromas.  I was somewhat disappointed that I didn’t find that note of pepper.  That is more the fault of the menu writer than the wine tho.  The glass I had was good to the last drop.  A nice deep red wine that held up and didn’t fade away.  I’ll be buying more of this.

Price: $8.95 a glass/ $34 a bottle @  Biaggi’s - $15 elsewhere online.

Google turns up a couple of places. Give these a try. Never used either vendor but the prices are right!

I found this at Total Wine in Ft Myers, Florida today. Bought a bottle. I’ll report back after drinking. :)
