2005 Crane Lake Sangiovese

Another of the $3.49 wines from Crane Lake; this time a Sangiovese. Tart, watery with a slight smoke and chocolate flavor. The tartness hangs around until the next drink. The flavor of this Sangiovese is very similar to others I have had in the past. I hadn’t drunk a Sangiovese until two years ago when Andrew recommended one to me. Since then, the funky wine tends to be my favorite to drink with Italian foods as well as its half-sibling the Super Tuscan. Sangiovese tends to be known as a cheaper wine anyway, and I’ve paid more for one and not gotten much better performance than this one. According to the Wikipedia article I linked to above, the vine of the Sangiovese is hearty, but the small dark berries are prone to rot, but, as the article says “it is easy to produce quantity at the expense of quality.”
I would buy this again, but maybe not in place of the Cabernet from Crane Lake.
